PANAMA, AUGUST 27, 2018. It is a great joy for the youth in Panama to rely on the historic first image of Our Lady of Fatima for World Youth Day because it will allow the indulgence and grace enjoyed in Portugal to be won in our country, according to Msgr. José Domingo Ulloa Mendieta.
Due to the importance of this event, representatives from the Shrine of Our Lady of Fatima traveled to Panama to directly inform national and international media of the details of the presence of this important image, which was carved following instructions from Sr. Lucia and solemnly crowned by the Archbishop of Evora on May 13th of 1947. Since that day, the image has traveled around the entire world many times, bearing with it a message of peace and love.
After more than half a century of pilgrimage, during which the Image visited 64 countries of all continents, some more than once, the Rectory of the Shrine of Fatima understood that it should not leave any more, outside of extraordinary circumstances. Although it made pilgrimages in Portugal, it has not left the country since 2000, but it will in order to come to Panama.
The rector of the Shrine of Fatima, Fr. Carlos Cabecinhas, related in a live video that this decision was taken because they recognized the importance of this world-wide event for youth, because of the devotion St. John Paul II had to the Virgin of Fatima, and because of the profound devotion present in the Catholic people of Panama.
Dr. Marco Daniel Duarte, director of the Museum of the Shrine of Fatima and director of the Department of Studies of the Shrine of Fatima, explained that due to the importance of this image, it will come accompanied by a delegation from the Shrine of Fatima, consisting of the rector, Fr. Carlos Manuel Cabecinhas; the director of the Department of the Pastoral of the Message of Fatima, Fr. José Nuno Da Silva; the curator and restorer, Dr. Carlos Manuel Henriques; from the Cabinet of Communication, Dr Catia Filipe; and himself.
